A Bit About Me

Supporting winter squash with Spaghetti Sqaush pasta and Squash Blossoms!

My interest in nutrition began when I moved out of my parents' house and had to learn how to cook. I became very passionate with methods from the past, which seemed to follow the patterns of the earth's seasons and cultivating and nurturing native and local plants.

This interest eventually inspired me to the study of one of the most basic and frequent natural needs of life, food and nutrition. There is so much information on traditional eating habits of different cultures but the current foods and food habits for most developing and developed nations are far removed these sources. I remember learning about seasonal fruits and vegetables. I was blown away by the idea of eating seasonally. I found that certain regions had specific growing times depending on the season and looked for a California season guide and stumbled on something even better, a Northern California guide from Cuesa (Center for Urban Education for Sustainable Agriculture, located at the San Francisco Ferry Building.) The decision to study food and nutrition really began for me then, it became a passion, a career possibility, a way to eat healthy, a way to help the environment, and to promote healthy cultural eating habits for my family.

My desire to be informed on healthy habits has led me to field of nutrition, because it dips into so many different fields such as community, gardening, science, history, culture and politics as well as affecting the culture of one’s immediate family. I am inspired to reach out to those around me and share my love for gardening, my passion and nutrition knowledge to my community!

Hachiya persimmons from my families persimmon tree! These must be eaten when they are soft and are traditionally dried in Japan.
